Behavior solutions that fit
Is your dog lunging at strangers? What about barking at them? Are you scared they are going to bite someone or have they? Maybe he tries to eat the mailman or even your family member? How about not being able to leave them alone because they eat your home? Hiding under furniture or constantly urinating in your home? What about dragging you down the street? All of these are fixable, by changing your dogs mind about the situation.
Changing dogs minds
It really is that simple! Making them realize what you expect in a situation is going to help them be better behaved and make them think differently!
I had no idea how much would change when I started dog training all those years ago. I went from trying to tell dogs what to do to teaching them that what I was asking was a good idea without using any kind of tools aside from a clicker, bait pouch, leash and harness. I thought when I first started that I needed to be the boss, and dogs were out to rule the world! I know much better now and have changed so many dogs and people's lives since I started training based on science based methods that use learning theory to address issues.
It has been a growing experience for me as I collected more and more knowledge as I study behavior science. I have watched dogs go from so aggressive they would never be near another dog or person to happy and relaxed in their normal environment. I have learned fear, anxiety and aggression tend to go hand in hand and how important changing their minds about a situation is.
You can't calm someone down by telling them not relax and just accept something anymore than you can make an agoraphobic person get over their fear by shoving them in a room full of spiders. Teaching them that spiders aren't so scary and letting them learn about them in a safe setting tends to change a lot of minds about how scary they are. While they may not be completely comfortable near them they can at least tolerate them enough not to lose their cool if they see one. And dogs are the same!
Why problem dogs?
Being able to help give a family back their best freind is so rewarding! Many of the dogs I meet their owners are at the end of their rope and ready to give up. Bringing these dogs out of their shells and back to well adjusted dogs is such a good feeling!
